Welcome to fall semester and HST 590: Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
This fall our focus will be on strategic communication skills for professional scientists. Our goal is to introduce you to the people and situations you will encounter when trying to communicate scientific ideas to the public. This semester we will use the case study approach to learning.
Our case study this semester is the Wellman Center for Photomedicine Open House. The Wellman Center is holding an open house for graduate students and potential collaborators in the Boston area on October 29, 2009. You will help plan and execute that open house.
Four basic concepts about professional communication
-
Professional communication includes both discrete skills that can be learned in a classroom as well as practices that are best learned in the process of doing professional work.
-
You need feedback and practice to improve.
-
Communication is integral to the development of your professional identity.
-
Development of communication abilities is a life-long process.
